Acupuncture FAQ’s Melbourne
Find answers to your questions about acupuncture, fertility and IVF support, women’s health and what to expect when visiting Elsternwick Acupuncture.

Your Appointment
What happens at my first appointment?
Your practitioner will take a detailed medical history, discuss your symptoms, lifestyle, diet, sleep and stress levels, and review any relevant blood tests or investigations. A traditional Chinese medicine assessment, including tongue and pulse diagnosis, will also be performed.
We’ll discuss our findings and provide guidance on treatment frequency, nutrition and lifestyle where appropriate.
Your first acupuncture treatment is included, allowing you time to relax in one of our comfortable, private treatment rooms.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very fine. Most people notice a brief sensation as a needle is placed, sometimes followed by a dull ache, warmth or heaviness. Please tell your practitioner if anything feels uncomfortable so it can be adjusted.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is provided by registered practitioners using sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are usually minor and short-lived, such as slight bruising, tiredness or light-headedness. Your practitioner will discuss any risks relevant to you before treatment.
How many appointments will I need?
This varies from person to person. Your practitioner will discuss a suggested plan at your first appointment and review it with you as you go.
Are your practitioners registered?
Yes. Our practitioners are registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia through AHPRA.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. If you are under the care of a GP or specialist, please bring any relevant results or letters.
What should I wear and bring?
Loose, comfortable clothing is best. Please bring recent test results, a list of medications and supplements and, for fertility patients, any cycle charts or treatment protocols.
Fertility and IVF
When should I start acupuncture if I am planning IVF?
You can begin at any stage. Where time allows, many patients start in the months before their cycle so there is time for a thorough assessment and planning.
Can I have acupuncture while taking IVF medication?
Yes. Acupuncture is provided as complementary care alongside your fertility specialist’s management. We do not alter or advise on your prescribed medication.
Do you work with my fertility specialist?
Your specialist leads your medical treatment. With your consent, we are happy to communicate with your treating team where this is helpful.
Can acupuncture guarantee a pregnancy?
No. No practitioner or treatment can guarantee a pregnancy. We provide individualised complementary care and will always be clear with you about what acupuncture can and cannot offer.
Do you see male partners?
Yes. We see men for male-factor fertility concerns and general health, and partners are welcome to attend appointments.
What is the difference between your fertility and IVF acupuncture care?
Fertility acupuncture is for anyone preparing for pregnancy or having difficulty conceiving. IVF acupuncture is planned specifically around an assisted reproductive treatment cycle.
